Case Study: Reversing Metabolic Syndrome Through Personalized Nutrition
Samantha* came in with chronic gut issues like bloating, diarrhea that came out of nowhere only to swing back to constipation. Talk about frustrating. Her main concern was a recent diagnosis of metabolic syndrome- marked by high fasting blood sugar, high triglycerides, and low HDL cholesterol. Her doctor gave her no advice so she came in confused and looking for answers. After a few weeks and dietary tweaks at a sustainable pace, she is pooping solid regularly and on her way to improved blood sugar.
*Name changed for privacy, and yes I picked a pretty generic name. When we’re talking about poop maybe it’s not a bad thing to be anonymous.
The Challenge: What Was Really Going On
Initial Symptoms:
Physical: fatigue, IBS symptoms, wonky blood sugar numbers
Mental/Emotional: depression, stressed out, concerned about her heart health/anxious
Impact on Daily Life: hard to get through the day, to get through chores and through work, grumpy with her partner and with no chill left
What She'd Already Tried:
All of it
Elimination diet
Generic meal plans
Supplements from social media (No. Just no. It’s probably an MLM guys.)
Conventional medical approaches, even though her doctor gave her no advice? Literally just said “good luck”??
Fitness programs
Other practitioners, including one who wanted her to take meetings outside so they could “ground”. Look, I’m all for integrative approaches but also some privacy. And office buildings.
The Real Problem:
While Sam thought she had multiple separate issues, what we discovered was gut dysbiosis affecting mood and metabolism. This is incredibly common in women her age because of fluctuating hormone levels, blood sugar, stress, and history of chronic dieting.
The gut-brain connection is real and it is strong and it is important. Sam had been experiencing a period of high stress that disrupted her digestion as well as her blood sugar and led to problems down the line with breaking down proteins, fats, and carbs. Because of her discomfort and stress she was also using food as a coping tool. This was throwing off her blood sugar which honestly made her feel anxious about her health. It is quite the cycle, but by supporting her mental health, nutrition, and gut health we were able to get her feeling better.

What Made This Different:
Working on her relationship with food while at the same time addressing underlying gut health issues was the key- going on another restrictive diet or just relying on over the counter poop pills wasn’t going to cut it. We had to build a sustainable plan based on both the information in front of us and real life where doing an intensive protocol just wasn’t financially or mentally sustainable. This led to amazing improvements in blood sugar numbers as well- proof that you don’t need complicated solutions for all problems, sometimes everything is connected.
The Transformation: Real Results
Measurable Results:
Physical, Metabolic, and Mental Changes:
50-60% reduction in bloating/digestive issues with a few weeks, almost complete resolution after 3 months
10/10 improvement in energy levels
Substantial improvement in blood sugar numbers with her CGM- her doc was very impressed!
Better sleep quality
Better relationships
More coping mechanisms
Cholesterol numbers TBD but we’re retesting soon!
